What is your Carbon Footprint?

Your carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases generated by your actions. Climate change is caused by Greenhouse Gases such as Carbon Dioxide and Methane. So, you can take action against climate change by reducing your footprint!

How do you calculate it?

You can use the 5-minute Climate Hero Ecological Footprint Calculator or the more detailed Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Carbon Footprint Calculator to calculate your footprint and see what changes you can make to reduce your impact.

How to reduce your footprint in Millbrae

Change the way you commute!

  • Millbrae has great transportation options. Try taking Caltrain, Bart, SamTrans, or a SPIN bike on your next commute! 
  • Try carpooling and unlock a $25 e-gift card reward for every set of 10 verified carpool days through Commute.org.
  • Take advantage of Peninsula Clean Energy’s Used EV Rebate to purchase a used EV.

Use Reusable

  • Bring your reusable tote bags when shopping.
  • Choose to use a reusable water bottle over plastic single-use bottles.
  • Drop by the Public Works Counter at Millbrae City Hall and pick up a set of reusable to-go utensils.
  • Report businesses that are using disposable plastic utensils and foodware on the county website.

Grow and Shop Local

  • Shop at the Millbrae Farmers Market every Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the City Parking Lot on 200 Broadway.
  • Shop at the local family-owned and operated produce market, Dean’s Produce, located on 451 Broadway.
  • Buy local Meat in Millbrae from Pape Meat Company.
  • Look for produce or fish labeled “As Fresh As It Gets” to buy food grown or harvested in San Mateo County.
  • Check out the San Mateo County Local Produce Guide to find seasonal local produce.
  • Take advantage of Millbrae’s sunshine and plant a vegetable garden at home, or look out for open plots at the Millbrae Community Garden in Central Park in the Millbrae Recreation Catalog.
  • Pick up Free Compost during the City’s Compost Giveaway Events.

Dry-up Household Water Consumption

  • Drop by the Public Works Counter at Millbrae City Hall and pick up free water-saving devices to install at home. 
  • Apply for a Rain Barrel Rebate and start collecting your own water.
  • Switch out your old irrigation controller with the high-tech Rachio 3 and take advantage of the City’s partnership with Rachio for a discounted price.
  • Plan to convert your lawn to drought-tolerant landscaping. Visit City Hall for inspiration!
  • Attend a Free Landscape Education workshop.
