[ARCHIVED] Millbrae Celebrates Black History Month

2024 Black History Month (375 x 550 px)

Black History Month is celebrated each February and was founded in 1915 by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, an African American historian, author, and journalist.

This year, the month-long celebration highlights “art as a platform for social justice,” spanning the many impacts Black Americans have had on visual arts, music, cultural movements, and more.

Black History Month also affords a special opportunity to further educate ourselves on the prejudice that still exists in our country and to work together to overcome this inequality.

San Mateo County consolidated an array of information and opportunities to further educate and participate in the celebration of Black History Month. Please visit https://www.smcoe.org/for-communities/black-history-month.html for more information.

In addition, you can join the Millbrae Library on Friday, February 9, at 3:30 PM for an African Village Celebration; this event is for all ages and includes engaging activities with Onye Onyemaechi, MBA, a globally acclaimed master percussionist, educator, author, and performing musician. Or you can attend two events on Friday, February 23, they will be hosting a Cultivating Compassion Workshop with Lakiba Pittman, MA, starting at 1:00 PM, and a virtual event, Celebrating Black Achievement: A Moderated Discussion. Starting at 2:00 PM. Be sure to check out these events listed below hosted by the Library!

African American Community Initiative (AACI) is hosting its 2024 Black History Month Celebration on February 17, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. This is a free community event promoting arts and wellness for African Americans. Expect a resource fair, speakers, and health and wellness checks. Lunch will be served. For more information and to register, please visit https://www.smchealth.org/general-information/2024-black-history-month-celebration.

We encourage everyone to look for opportunities within our community to participate and celebrate Black History Month.
